Sarah from The Crafty Fork smilingHi, I’m Sarah.  I have been cooking as long as I can remember.  Even as a toddler, my mom would have me measure and dump dry ingredients like flour while she baked.  I have been doing this a long time.

Growing up, we always ate at home, and I’d say 90% of the meals my parents made were entirely “from scratch.”  Sure on occasion we ate at restaurants, but maybe only once a month.  In addition to being homemade, our meals were rounded: there was always a protein, some carbs, and at least one vegetable.  And dinner was always at the table, with everyone present.  Always.  We lived in Maine and had a vegetable garden, bought foods “in season,” and ordered our Thanksgiving turkeys from a local family farm.

The current trend in local, organic, artisan food is very near and dear to me.  I’ve been living this way my whole life!  (Maybe not as a college student, when bagels, peanut butter, and frozen pizza were my staples… but I digress…) Now that I have a family of my own, and talk with other parents a lot, I am constantly sharing my recipes and “tricks” to get my kid to eat healthily.  (hint: there are no tricks!  Just eat what you should eat, and the kids will too).

I don’t think you need to be a trained chef, or have lots of fancy equipment, to eat well and cook delicious, pleasurable, and most importantly, healthy food.  I also think it is OK to eat out, so long as you eat well.

In addition to cooking,  I also like to make stuff, take photos, and write.  So, The Crafty Fork is a natural progression.  I post a new recipe (or borrowed/adapted recipe) at least weekly that any home cook can make, along with some photographs and maybe some witty, entertaining prose.  In addition to being a native Mainer, I’ve lived in Boston, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and now I live in the Bay Area, CA.  My recipes and projects draw from each of these places, which, in their own way, can all be called “home” for me.  Welcome and thanks for reading!
